Karaoke bars fined over copyright
EIGHT karaoke bars in Shanghai have been ordered to pay 480,000 yuan (US$70,300) for breaching music copyright by refusing to pay royalties, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
They will also have to pay 1.15 million yuan in royalty fees to China Audio-Video Copyright Association, the newspaper said.
They are among the first 11 karaoke bars brought to court by the association and lawsuits have been issued for a second group, the association told the newspaper.
There are nearly 1,000 karaoke bars in Shanghai operating 17,000 rooms. More than 90 percent have paid for music copyright, according to the association.
Those who refuse to pay face fines of 40 percent of the due fees, plus repayment of royalties.
