Kidnap foiled by cops
TWO men and two women were detained yesterday for allegedly kidnapping a middle-aged woman for ransom, Shanghai police said yesterday.
The injured victim, surnamed Ma, in her 40s, was rescued and taken to hospital where she was in stable condition, police in Changning District said.
Police said they raided three locations about 4am yesterday, cornering the four suspects and saving Ma who had been held for about 27 hours.
Ma's husband tipped off the police on Friday at 2am soon after he received a phone call from the kidnappers, asking for 6 million yuan (US$878,334) in ransom.
The kidnap organizer, surnamed Dong, told police the gang targeted Ma driving alone in a white car when she went to a Carrefour supermarket in Changning District on Thursday afternoon.
Stepping out of their car, the suspects pulled out a dagger and pushed Ma into her own vehicle when she returned to the parking lot outside the supermarket.
Dong later drove off in Ma's car, with one suspect guarding her in the back seat. Ma started to bleed after fighting the kidnappers, according to the police.
"They stabbed me when I struggled to get away from them,?she said.
The suspects abandoned Ma's car in Minhang District and took her to an apartment where she was held in a guarded room with her hands and feet tied while they made the ransom call.
"They threatened me not to call the police and asked me to get Ma's car back,?her husband said.
Police caught Dong and another suspect in a hotel in Putuo District and seized another two at Dong's residence and the apartment where Ma was held.
Dong had sustained business losses of about 1.6 million yuan, said police who were continuing investigations yesterday.
