'Kidnapped' man held for false claims
A MAN has been detained for falsely claiming that he was kidnapped for nine days, city police said yesterday.
The Pudong New Area police said they received a report on Tuesday from the suspect's sister, claiming that her brother had been kidnapped for nine days before he eventually escaped and arrived home around 3am that morning. But the story soon turned out to be a facade as the "victim" kept contradicting himself while describing his so-called ordeal, police said.
The man, whose name was not disclosed, made up the story to extract money from his family after he ran out of cash.
The suspect claimed he was suddenly blindfolded by two men while walking out of an Internet bar on Shangchuan Road in Caolu Town around 5am on September 30. He was robbed of 3,000 yuan (US$477) cash as well as his cell phone and identity card.
He said he was pushed into a car and then put up in a room with another kidnapped man for nine days until they jumped out of the third floor window and escaped on Monday evening.
However, police found his words rang false. The man said he had jumped out of the third floor to escape, however, there were no injuries on him.
