'Killer' saved from fire

A MAN was saved from a hotel room blaze yesterday, then detained for allegedly killing his girlfriend because she wanted to break up with him, police said.

The 23-year-old suspect surnamed Yan from Zhejiang Province is said to have strangled a 21-year-old woman surnamed Chen early yesterday, said Huangpu District police.

Police officers said Chen wanted to end their relationship, which enraged Yan.

After killing Chen, Yan set a bedsheet alight in a suicide bid, police claimed.

He was not seriously injured and was in stable condition yesterday, said officers, who were still investigating.

The incident took place about midnight at Pretty House Hotel on Guangxi Road S., said a security guard at a nearby residential area. "There was thick smoke and many firefighters and police officers rushed to the scene," the guard said.

The second floor blaze triggered the hotel fire alarm and fire sprinklers. Police said Yan locked himself in the room and rescuers had to break down the door.

The fire was extinguished soon after.
