Kindy kid left in coma
A six-year-old boy was left in a coma after he fell down steps at a kindergarten on Huaihai Road W. on Tuesday.
"The boy will probably be in a long-term vegetative state," said an official surnamed Tao from Xuhui District police.
The accident happened at 11:30am when the children had just finished lunch.
"But there was no witnesses who could explain how the boy fell from the steps on the second floor," Tao said.
Tao said the boy, surnamed Shi, was probably playing alone after lunch and he must have missed a step and fell.
Police said there was no evidence to suggest someone pushed or hit the boy, but they were still investigating.
The boy was sent to hospital at 12:05pm and local education bureau officials visited the kindergarten and apologized to the parents, according to a notice on the bureau's Website.
Kindergarten and education bureau officials were unavailable for comment yesterday.
"As soon as the police discover the cause of the accident, we will punish those responsible and ask for compensation," said Yang Yongming, from the local youth protection office.
In April 2008, an 11-year-old girl died after falling from a fourth floor at Tianlin No. 4 Primary School without any witnesses.
