Kiwi fruit importer arrested for tax evasion

A Shanghai agent for Zespri Kiwifruit, New Zealand's sole exporter of kiwi fruit, has been arrested for evading 60 million yuan of import tariff with forged documents, Shanghai Customs officials said.

The city's prosecutors said the general manager of Zespri's local agent company, surnamed Liu, would be charged with the crime of smuggling.

Zespri is a widely recognized trademark for New Zealand kiwi fruit and its exports sell at much higher prices than domestic products. Zespri has enjoyed popularity and stable sales in the local market.

Customs officials said the middle-aged manager was responsible for forging trade documents in order to evade import duties.
