Knife attacker collapses and dies after stabbings
A MAN collapsed and died after he stabbed several people, including a woman believed to be his girlfriend, following a car accident yesterday morning in the Pudong New Area.
Police said five people are being treated in hospital where they are in a stable condition.
A local TV report said that eight people had been injured during the incident.
Police said that the man, surnamed Xu, 30, was suspected of being a drug addict.
"He had a record of gambling and was a troublemaker who did harm to others before," police said.
Xu was driving on Pudong's Nanlu Highway when his car crashed into a greenery area early yesterday morning. Police were alerted at 5:48am that the man had assaulted passers-by after leaving the car.
"A woman first rushed out of the car, who was then closely followed by the man waving a long knife," said a witness.
After striking the woman, believed to be his girlfriend, Xu began to attack passers-by, police said.
Witnesses said the man acted "crazy all the way during the assault."
"All of a sudden, he rushed toward me and asked, 'did you call the police?'" said an injured woman, surnamed Chen, who was washing clothes nearby.
"He slashed the knife on my head before I could even answer," Chen said.
When police arrived and brought Xu under control, he suddenly fell to the ground, his body in convulsions.
He was later pronounced dead in hospital.
Police investigations are continuing.
