Kormor remembered

A PLAQUE in memory of former Shanghai resident Paul Kormor was unveiled yesterday at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum, in recognition of his efforts to help European Jews who had fled to Shanghai from Nazi persecution. During the Hungarian’s term as Honorary Secretary of the International Committee for the Organization of European immigrants in China, between August 1938 and January 1942, he offered humanitarian aid to thousands of Jewish refugees, raising funds and buying food, milk and coal for them, said the Hungarian Consulate General in Shanghai. Kormor issued international passports to Jews in the city whose documents had been confiscated or were not valid, while stateless refugees has also received identification cards signed by the official.
