Kunqu Opera classics to be staged

SHANGHAI Kunqu Opera Troupe will present a newly revised and polished version of Kunqu Opera classic "The Palace of Eternal Youth," after its successful debut 10 years ago.
From September 21 to 24, the complete version, after newly revised and polished by the troupe will be staged at the Shanghai Grand Theater. By the end of this year, the spectacular will have 20 performances in the major cities of China.
The play tells a tragic love story between Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) Emperor Li Longji and his concubine Yang Yuhuan. Yang was forced to commit suicide as she was blamed for a rebellion at that time.
Kunqu Opera, with a history of around 600 years, is also listed as a UNESCO Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage.
The show will feature exquisite costumes and stunning visual effects on stage. Kunqu Opera artists Cai Zhengren, Zhang Jingxian will perform with young talented performers.
Officials from Shanghai Grand Theater said that local fans have shown strong enthusiasm for the play as more than half of the tickets have already been sold.
