Labor disputes on the rise

THE Shanghai Labor Disputes Arbitration handled more than 120,000 cases last year due to employees' rising awareness in safeguarding their own rights, said Qiu Baohua, president of the arbitration, at a forum of labor and employment law held on Tuesday.

The forum was organized by River Delta Law Firm to gather related departments to share experiences in solving labor related disputes as early as possible.

The disputes of employees also became more and more complicated as 60 percent of the cases involved more than one appeal and 20 percent even had more than four appeals, said Qiu.

Qiu pointed out that it was important for labor related government organizations to step up forward and solve the disputes at their source.

Chen Dake, director of labor and employment department of the Human Resources and Social Security Bureau at Pudong New Area, said the labor disputes in the area have been decreasing after it set up a mechanism to register enterprises with plans to close down, suspend operation, merge with others or shift to different businesses. Chen said it has been providing consultation and guidance in solving labor disputes for those employers and none of them had aftermath problems.
