LAIYIFEN, a well-known snack food chain store in Shanghai, said it would stop selling all fruit preserves from three suppliers who were exposed to have used excessive amounts of food additives.

Fruit preserves supplied by three factories in Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang Province would be removed from shelves, the Shanghai-based snack retailor said on its microblog this morning.

Laiyifen will send product samples to inspection authorities for further examination. Customers who worry about the safety of fruit preserves they bought from Laiyifen can ask for a refund at any Laiyifen outlet.

An investigation by the state-run CCTV found excessive amounts of harmful food additives, were used in the production of fruit preserves in the three exposed factories. Their workshops were also extremely filthy.

The tested fruit preserves contained high levels of artificial sweeteners, food colors and bleaching agents, which are harmful to the liver and kidneys, the CCTV report said.
