Landmark Great World to reopen before Expo


SHANGHAI'S landmark entertainment hall The Great World will reopen before May after a seven-year closure.

At the junction of Xizang Road S. and Yan'an Road E. downtown area, The Great World, built in 1917, was billed the "No.1 entertainment park in the Far East" in its heyday, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

It will show movies, operas, and amusements such as its renowned distorting mirrors.

Outer renovation of the classic building has been completed. Its original look was retained as well as the trademark mirrors. The interior decoration is yet to start, the report citied Huangpu District Commerce Committee as saying.

The newly opened Great World will be larger than the original. The Yunnan Road strip featuring restaurants nearby will also reopen after the entertainment hall opens, commercial officials said.
