Legislators to discuss smoke ban
DISCUSSION on the legislation of the city's first anti-smoking law will be launched this month by Shanghai People's Congress, the lawmaker, and a preliminary report has suggested four different levels of ban.
Places where smoking indoors and outdoors can be banned include kindergartens, schools and hospitals, while indoor smoking may be banned in museums and public transport waiting rooms.
Venues such as restaurants and work places could be required to set up special smoking areas, while other public venues will be encouraged to carry out their own smoking-control measures, according to the report.
"We will report details of the investigation to a congress meeting over the weekend and do further preparation for the draft's first official discussion," said Zhang Liqiang, director of the Shanghai Health Education Institute and one of the draft writers.
