'Life crystal' service turning ashes into jewels launches in city today

A new burial option converting cremation ashes into "jewelry" is offered at a local funeral parlor today by the city's civil affairs authorities.

The technology introduced from South Korea transforms ashes into about 100 particulate matters or "life crystal" as it is officially called under high temperature.

It allows bereaved relatives to have a permanent reminder of their lost loved ones on their fingers or around their necks, or just keep it at home depending on their request.

Due to the difference of trace elements, particulate matters of different bodies have different colors, said Liu Fengming, an official with the Shanghai Funeral and Interment Service Center.

The particulate matter can be turned into jewelry accessories like rings and bracelets, books, or whatever their relatives want.

It costs 17,900 yuan to make ashes into particulate matters and the size of particulate matters is only 10 to 15 percent of ashes they are made of.

Last year, 129,000 people died in the city, and the figure has kept rising for five consecutive years, according to Liu.

However, many cemeteries in the city suffer a serious shortfall of land, and they are forced to put a lid on the land for tombs every year, he said.

The scheme should help to reduce the demand for land for burials, and curb the rising prices of tombs, said Liu.
The service is offered at the Yishan Funeral Parlor in Minhang District from today, but it is expected to be launched at other funeral parlors in the city depending on its acceptance.

In addition, the Longhua Funeral Parlor in Xuhui District set up a 3D printing studio today to restore corpses badly damaged in accidents, fires and natural disasters.
