Liverpool orchestra

THE Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at the World Expo in October as part of its six-day China tour.

The orchestra will be involved in the "Liverpool Wondrous Place" event that will take place at the Expo from October 15-18.

Russian Vasily Petrenko will conduct the orchestra, which will perform two concerts at Shanghai Concert Hall: Elgar's "Cockaigne" and Shostakovich's "Symphony No. 15."

The philharmonic will also perform a piece composed for a new Chinese stringed instrument called the "dahu," which was created by Li Kui Hsuing, who worked on the soundtrack for the famous film "The Last Emperor."

Petrenko is delighted that his first ever performance in China will take place in Shanghai.

"It is a realization of a long-held ambition," said Petrenko, who was named Young Artist of the Year in 2007 by a major European classical music magazine.
