Local Metro operator apologizes for wrongly accusing passenger as ‘fare evader’
Metro operator apologized for having wronged a passenger as a fare evader.
Shanghai Shentong Metro Group posted a statement through its official Weibo account yesterday to apologize for wrongly accusing a woman passenger surnamed Zhi as a fare evader at Line 2’s Loushanguan Road Station on Tuesday.
According to the statement, a Metro staff member saw Zhi going beneath the turnstile when leaving the station on Tuesday morning.
Suspecting that she might be evading ticket fare, they walked up to Zhi and demanded her to show the ticket or other materials that could prove she paid the fare.
However, Zhi refused to cooperate and started a quarrel with the staff.
Other passengers took pictures of the conflict, claiming Zhi to be a fare evader and posted them onto Internet. The post was later retweeted by Shanghai Metro’s official Weibo account.
Investigation showed that Zhi did scan her transportation card at the turnstile while attempting to leave the station. However, another passenger jumped the queue and walked through the turnstile before Zhi, who had to bend down and go beneath the turnstile to leave the station.
Shentong apologized to Zhi and deleted the earlier post, saying they should have verified the fact before retweeting other passengers’ post regarding the conflict.
