Local expat receives award in promoting traffic rules

DANIEL Howard, an expat from the US who teaches at Shanghai Community International School and a traffic volunteer, was awarded “Top 10 Exemplary Resident in Promoting Traffic Rules” by the city government on Tuesday.

Previously awarded the monthly prize in July last year, Howard stood out in online voting and recommendations this month to make the final list.

Together with him, the award winners included bus and taxi drivers and non-governmental organizations.

Howard told Shanghai Daily after receiving the award that he’s been working as a traffic volunteer from time to time and enjoying it.

“I’ve just come back from the winter holiday, and just before the holiday we were out on the streets again,” he said.

Government said every working day during peak hours there are 15,000 traffic volunteers around the city helping police officers manage the traffic.
