Local hiker cremated in Lhasa
THE body of a Shanghai hiker, who died last Friday during a trip to Tibet, was cremated in Lhasa yesterday as her parents and fellow travelers bid her farewell at a funeral parlor.
An online donation drive, started by Jin Ling's companions on the journey, raised more than 24,000 yuan (US$3,863) so that Jin's parents could fly to Lhasa from Shanghai to see their only daughter one last time.
A local youth hotel covered the parents' accommodation cost in the Tibet Autonomous Region capital.
Jin, who quit her job two years ago, started her hike from the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to Tibet in August and had planned to celebrate her 31st birthday on Sunday in Lhasa. It was her second trip to Tibet, which turned out to be her last.
Jin was found suffering from symptoms of high altitude disease last Wednesday when she arrived in Zanda County in Tibet's Ngari Area.
Despite doctor's advise, Jin continued her trip last Friday but soon fainted and then died on the way to Burang County, more than 1,000 kilometers from her destination.
Jin's body was later rushed to Lhasa on Sunday by her companions and a good Samaritan driver.
