Local hospital cures newborn girl of fatal deformity

A newborn girl was discharged from Shanghai Children’s Medical Center today after receiving a successful minimally invasive surgery on the next day of her delivery to treat her congenital intestinal deformity.

The girl has recovered very well and is eating normally. Doctors said the girl is discharged ten days after surgery thanks to minimally invasive surgery, which shortens hospital stay by one week.

The girl was detected deformity during prenatal check and she was transferred to the hospital upon delivery.

The deformity is fatal to the girl, as she could be unable to eat and suffer follow-up intestinal blockage. The problem would then press her chest and influence her respiration afterwards, doctors said.

“We decided to launch the surgery on the next day and conduct minimally invasive surgery to leave much less cut and ensure a quicker recovery for the baby,” said Dr Yan Zhilong, director of the hospital’s surgery department. “It is a pretty little girl and we don’t want our surgery to leave an obvious scar on her body.”

Doctors spent two hours to work in the baby’s intestinal with a less than one-centimeter diameter to repair the deformity.
