Local hospital introduces weight-loss surgery to diabetes patients
Local doctors are teaming up with leading Western experts to introduce weight-loss surgery as an option for type II diabetes patients.
Cooperating with US-based Duke University Medical Center, Shanghai Pudong Hospital is using bariatric surgery on patients with type II diabetes. Thus far results have been good.
Dr Zhang Peng from Pudong Hospital’s diabetes and obesity surgery treatment center, said obesity is an important risk factor in type II diabetes. Between 80 and 90 percent of type II diabetes patients are overweight or obese.
“More people have unhealthy diets, lack exercise and face strong work pressure, all of which has led to an increase in diabetes and obesity in China,” he said. “There are more than 90 million diabetes patients in the country. The traditional therapy includes health education, diet control, exercise, monitoring and medication but it doesn’t always work. Some patients have died of diabetes complications.”
Foreign experts have turned to bariatric surgery like gastric banding and gastric bypass in recent years and have achieved positive results. Over 85 percent of patients who have weight-loss surgery have seen their blood sugar levels return to normal days after surgery, which means they may no longer need medication.
Zhang stressed that every patient is different and that doctors consider many factors before recommending surgery.
“Obesity surgery is not an option for every patient, we will strictly screen the patients to ensure safe and satisfactory results,” he said.
