Local leukemia researcher picks up prestigious award

A local researcher responsible for a leukemia breakthrough received the highest natural science award at the Shanghai Science and Technology Awards today.

Chen Saijuan and her team from Ruijing Hospital discovered a series of new molecular targets in the treatment of leukemia. The discovery made acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) the first curable leukemia.

Doctors said APL has a high mortality rate, but Chen’s therapy has made it possible for patients to recover from the disease.

“The therapy for APL is called the ‘Shanghai Scheme” and it’s widely recognized in the world and used in many international blood centers and hospitals,” said Chen, whose team is focused on TCM treatment for leukemia through modern technology.

“I was thanked by an Italian patient when I attended a medical forum in Rome in 2009. The patient recovered from APL by the Shanghai Scheme,” Chen added. “His doctor told him Chinese doctors had invented the treatment. He asked his doctor, who also was at the forum, to give me the card to express his gratitude. It is such a great joy for me and my team.”

A total of 287 people and projects picked up awards.

Mohanmad Sawan from Canada, Chen Hongyu from the United States and Gilles Mailhot from France were honored for their contribution to international technology cooperation.

Almost 60 percent of the awards went to three industries — biology and medicine, information technology, as well as energy and environment — according to officials from the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission.
