Local police expose 12 jaywalkers on social media

POLICE of downtown Huangpu District published pictures of 12 pedestrians, including four westerners, who went through red lights on Friday, as part of the city’s campaign against traffic offenses on the streets.

The pictures, with close-up takes of the rule-ignoring pedestrians as well as long shots of them crossing the streets, appeared in a post on Huangpu police’s official WeChat account “Huangpu Gong’an”.

The four westerners were seen on zebra lines at the crossroads of Huanghai Road M. and Chengdu Road S. when a red light was on.

Pedestrians who go through red lights could be fined 5 to 50 yuan (US$0.7 to 7), according to Chinese traffic laws, but fines are not often given.

Huangpu police said they will make the exposure of various traffic offenses a weekly feature on their account.
