Local police nab suspect in string of mobile phone thefts

Police today caught a woman suspected of stealing mobile phones from shopping malls, boutiques and hair salons around the city over the past few months.

The young woman, whose identity wasn’t revealed, was spotted at East Xujing station along Metro Line 2 this morning. She was wearing a white dress and black-framed spectacles.

Police had yesterday called on residents to report any clues of the suspect dubbed “the woman in white” after an online post with footage of the woman stealing a handset went viral earlier in the day.

According to the post, authored by “All about Shanghai,” a popular public account on WeChat, the woman was caught by surveillance cameras stealing phones in stores when shop attendants or cashiers were not in sight.

She allegedly stole phones from an Innisfree skin care outlet at the former Expo site in Pudong, Sly boutique in Xintiandi, a store at Star Live Mall and another at Shanghai Arch Walk Mall in Changning District.

One piece of footage showed a woman getting caught when trying to grab a phone from the counter of a boutique in Raffles City near People’s Square last Sunday. The incident wasn’t reported.

The post also said that some shop attendants at Xintiandi claimed the woman is “well-known” because she allegedly had committed several thefts in the past few months that were reported to the police.

The woman in white was also accused of stealing jewelry worth tens of thousands yuan from a shop on Damuqiao Road in Xuhui District on July 16.

The owner of the shop, a man surnamed Zhou, told Shanghai Daily he was “100 percent convinced” that the woman who stole from him was the person that appeared in the other surveillance videos.

Zhou also said the woman likely has accomplices.
