Local scientists invented new graphene material

LOCAL scientists invented a new graphene material, which can triple energy capacity of current graphene supercapacitors. The achievement was published by the world-leading journal Science today.

The new material—nitrogen-doped order mesoporous grapheme can be used in supercapacitors for electronic vehicles, smart power grids and space plane. It also can be used for batteries for moped, which only needs ten seconds for the current 5-hour recharge but only one-third of current weight, scientists from Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

“Graphene is a very promising and ideal material for energy storage, but it’s current energy storage is lower than lithium battery and lead acid battery, though it is more environmentally friendly, lighter and safer,” said Lin Tianquan, a leading scientist of the project. “Our research is to develop a new type of grapheme to raise its energy capacity.”

He said the new materials can realize a recharge by seven seconds and will be introduced to industrial use in the near future.
