Lottery to help quake areas
TICKETS in the 2010 World Expo-themed welfare lottery will start selling across the country tomorrow with a top prize of 300,000 yuan (US$43,920).
All profits will be donated to the earthquake-affected areas of southwestern China's Sichuan Province.
People can buy the "scratch-and-win" tickets at Century Square on Nanjing Road E. from 2pm tomorrow when some performances will be staged to celebrate the launch.
Another two sales outlets will be set up at Grand Gateway shopping mall in Xujiahui and Thumb Plaza in Pudong.
The tickets, with 17 designs of four series of themes, will sell at prices of 5 yuan, 10 yuan and 20 yuan and be in both Chinese and English.
Buyers can check whether they have won a prize instantly by scraping an area on the tickets.
Top prize for the 5 yuan ticket is 100,000 yuan, while 200,000 yuan is the top prize for a 10 yuan ticket and 300,000 yuan for a 20 yuan ticket.
Up to 65 percent of revenue from ticket sales will be pooled as prize money. The rest will be donated to the May 12, 2008, earthquake-affected areas, according to rules set by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Tickets would incorporate World Expo elements and may become collectors' items, the ministry said.
