Lottery winner loses out on unclaimed prize

THE winner of a 5.66-million-yuan (US$827,739) lottery jackpot failed to collect the cash yesterday, the deadline for picking up the prize. The unclaimed money will be added to the next draw, the Shanghai Welfare Lottery Center said.

The winning numbers were announced on December 18 last year. The winning ticket was purchased at an outlet on Jiangyue Road in Minhang District.

"The winner is a tall, middle-aged man with a strong accent," said a man surnamed Yu who believes he witnessed the purchase of the ticket. "I happened to see the last number of his ticket. It was a blue ball number two, which came out the previous time as well. Normally, we lottery buyers would avoid that number. But it turned out to be the winning number."

Shen Longping, the owner of the lottery booth, said more people are buying tickets at the shop as word has spread that a winning ticket was sold at the outlet.

Officials with the center said the winner may not have realized he won a big prize.

"Minhang has many migrant workers and we think the winner may have been a migrant who has now left for his hometown for the Spring Festival," said Ma Shaohua, an official with the center.

According to Union Lotto rules, a prize can only be claimed within 30 days of the draw. It was the first time such a large lottery prize has gone unclaimed in Shanghai.
