Big rush to tie the knot last day of the year for common reason

MARRIAGE registration centers across the city were packed with lovebirds who advanced the time of drawing a marriage certificate after new policy taking effect tomorrow would officially cancel the late marriage leave from tomorrow.

From tomorrow, the late marriage leave is cancelled according to new policy, meaning couples of all age can only have three days of marriage leave instead of 10 days in the past.

The Yangpu District Marriage Registration Center received 80 couples tying the knot this morning, doubling the whole day figure of a normal working day.

A total of 247 couples drew their marriage certificates at the center yesterday, compared with 30 for a normal working day.

"The majority of these couples changed original plans to catch the leave, and some who planned to tie the knot on January 1 and have already made reservation also visited yesterday and today," Yu Weiting, director of the center, told Shanghai Daily.

The Xuhui District registration center received more than 100 couples this morning, three times the whole day figure of a normal working day.

Martin Jian, 26, found there were 85 couples waiting in front of him when he arrived at the Huangpu District Marriage Registration Center around 10am today.

He queued one and a half hours.

"I planned to draw the certificate after spring originally, but I learnt about the new policy yesterday from media and decided to tie the knot today because I don't want to lose the leave," he told Shanghai Daily.
