'Loving Moms' get care for poor kids
EIGHT sick or handicapped orphans from Pingdingshan, Henan Province, will receive treatment in Shanghai after being escorted by Lu Mengtao and other volunteers.
Lu and another nine local women established Loving Mom, which collects donations to send sick, poverty-stricken children from other provinces to Shanghai for treatment. They have helped 86 abandoned kids and collected 4.6 million yuan (US$725,552) for 53 surgeries since 2008.
The group has an apartment in the Pudong New Area to accommodate sick children before and after hospitalization.
Officials from Shanghai Children's Medical Center said it has an ongoing relationship with the group, which has sent children for congenital heart disease surgery and neurosurgery.
"We will sign a cooperation agreement with Aiyou Huaxia Charity Foundation, a registered foundation, next month. The charity foundation will include Loving Mom as its branch," SCMC's Xia Lin said.
