Lucky wedding date falls on a Sunday

ALL 20 marriage registration offices across Shanghai will open at the weekend for the first time to allow couples to marry on the lucky date October 10, 2010, which falls on a Sunday.

Hundreds of young couples want to get married on the date 10-10-10, which means "perfect" in Chinese, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The offices will also open online reservations for that day to ensure all couples who apply can get married on their chosen date, Zhou Jixiang, marriage registration unit director with Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau, told the newspaper.

Chinese people like to choose auspicious dates to tie the knot, hoping the dates will bring luck and prosperity.

On September 9, 2009, 8,852 local couples registered their marriage in Shanghai as the date was believed to signal a long and happy marriage.

On August 8, 2008, 7,189 couples registered to marry as eight, sounding like "prosperity," is thought to bring wealth and good fortune.
