Magical 'healer' is put out of business
SONGJIANG District government has shut down the so-called clinic whose doctor claimed to be legendary Ji Gong and magically cured diseases.
Town government officials said they demolished the boat that he used as his "clinic" and offered a compensation of 800 yuan (US$117), officials said yesterday.
The man, blind and jobless, asked for more than 100,000 yuan at first.
The government officials persuaded him to quit by securing him social welfare for people living under the city's poverty line.
"The village and town officials came to talk him out of the business many times," said Ye Tangsheng, a town government official.
"He promised that he would never carry out the fatuous business."
The man claimed to heal incurable diseases, including cancer, by holding exorcisms.
