Man Throws Stub, Burns Down Warehouse

A migrant worker has been detained after he set a warehouse on fire by throwing a lighted cigarette inside, Hongkou District police said yesterday.

The fire occurred about 10pm on May 2 in a company warehouse on Beibaoxing Road. No one was injured.

The fire department concluded, after an initial probe, that arson could be the cause. Three men had walked past the warehouse before the incident, police said after checking video clips from surveillance cameras. They were the suspect surnamed Li and two of his friends.

Li threw his stub right into the scavenger fan of the warehouse as he walked past, which later caused the big blaze that destroyed the place. He was caught last Wednesday in Qingpu District and will be charged with arson and could face up to 10 years in jail.
