Man arrested over robbery, rape and kidnap

A MAN has been arrested after allegedly holding his girlfriend at knifepoint for eight hours to resist police investigating a rape and robbery.

Qingpu District People's Procuratorate issued an arrest warrant for the man surnamed Yan on charges of kidnapping, rape and robbery, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

Yan, 36, a native of Sichuan Province, had been living with an Anhui Province girl surnamed Zhang. Their love turned sour after Yan took to gambling and they often quarreled, the report said.

Zhang moved out of their home in September, and lived in a hostel. Yan visited a friend surnamed Cheng who had often scolded him when he had fights with his girlfriend, and allegedly raped her before taking cash, a kitchen knife, mobile phone and bank card, the report said.

He then visited Zhang at the hostel and when police arrived, allegedly held her hostage for eight hours at knifepoint before giving into negotiators, the report said.
