Man detained after Metro stunt
SHANGHAI police said yesterday that they have caught a man who videotaped himself lying between the tracks as a subway train whizzed by above him at a Metro station and posted the footage online.
The man, surnamed Tang, 28, was to be detained for 10 days, police said.
Tang filmed the stunt after a bet with his friends for 100 yuan (US$14.77), police said.
A spokesman with city Metro police said yesterday Tang was detained for "disturbing order in a public place."
Metro surveillance cameras showed the video-maker suddenly climbing down to the track as a train entered Line 3's Youyi Road Station about 10:35pm on July 24.
The train was shown less than 10 meters away when Tang lay down between the tracks, holding the camera over his face as the train passed over his head.
The train driver used the emergency brake to stop the train, said subway operator Shanghai Shentong Metro Group.
However, train services resumed within a minute.
The 50-second video footage became a popular after Tang put it on a video-sharing website on July 30.
Tang was caught at his home about noon on Wednesday, police said.
Tang told police he and his friends joked about whether he could pull off the stunt in a Metro station, and said his friends agreed to give him 100 yuan if he succeeded.
Tang told police that he also "wanted to satisfy his desire for adventure."
Officers said Tang would be given psychological help.
Police warned that such behavior is intolerable and said they would strengthen checks on subways.
