Man detained for hugging teen girl
A man is serving 15 days' detention for harassing a middle-school girl in public near People's Square on Saturday, police said yesterday.
Police said the man, in his 30s, is unemployed and from out of town. Witnesses told police a group of men were wandering around the People's Square area on Saturday, harassing and assaulting young women who were by themselves.
Police said they were investigating.
Officers said the man was caught by passers-by after he hugged a 13-year-old teenager at a bus stop near Guangdong Road and Xizang Road.
Police took him in for questioning.
On her microblog, a woman said a few men "shouted at me when I came out of a underground pass."
The men were soon approaching other women on their own, she said.
"At first the men just touched them, then they began hugging the women."
No one intervened until the girl was hugged from behind by one of the men, she wrote.
Sexual harassment has become an often-mentioned topic after a series of such incidents on the city's Metro system.
Metro officials said there had been an increase in the number of complaints from women about sexual harassment, which included men exposing themselves.
The Metro operator also sparked a heated debate following a warning to female passengers to "dress modestly."
Opinion was divided online. Some people agreed that women should dress conservatively when taking public transport while others said it was a woman's right to dress as she liked.
