Man detained for parking space swindle

A man was detained for allegedly forging contracts to sell parking spaces to six people in a residential community, Changning District police said.

The suspect, surnamed Liu, swindled more than 600,000 yuan (US$87,783) from 2006 to 2008 while working as a parking lot worker, police said.

He fled in February after one of his victims visited the property management office to pay the parking management fee, police said.

"The property management officials said I was not the owner of the parking space which I bought from Liu," said the victim, surnamed Wei.

Liu told property owners who wanted to rent their underground parking spaces he could rent them for them.

He then sold the spaces at a cheap price and gave the owners a reasonable rent.

Police said Liu forged the sales contract and the property management company's seal to convince victims the contract was genuine.

Most of the money Liu made was lost gambling, police said.
