Man detained over counterfeit drugs

A PASSENGER at a Shanghai bus station was detained for allegedly dealing in counterfeit drugs, authorities said today.

Shanghai Food & Drug Administration said 200 bottles of human serum albumin (HSA) found in the suspect's luggage did not contain real proteins after inspection, which would cause serious harm if anyone took the drug.

The suspect surnamed Li was caught on May 13 at Shanghai Long-Distance Bus Station on his way home with the drug. Security staff found the drug in Li's four cases and called the administration.

Li said he bought the batch of HSA from people outside the city and was due to meet a client for a deal that was later cancelled. He was about to carry the drug back to his home town Taixing in neighboring Jiangsu Province.

On May 21, Shanghai Institute for Food and Drug Control released a report finding the drugs contained no protein.

The case was still under investigation.
