Man dies in restaurant fight; 3 suspects sought

A drunken young man died in a gang fight early yesterday morning in a restaurant in Shanghai's suburban Songjiang District, police said.

At least five people were involved in the fight, two men from one side and three from the other, during which the victim surnamed Zhang was seriously beaten and injured, said the district police. Zhang, 21, was pronounced dead after being rushed to a hospital, and Songjiang police were pursuing the three suspects last night.

"The guys from both sides were drunk," said an officer, Jiang Wencheng. "The fight was triggered just because the three stared too long at Zhang and his friend's girlfriends."

The fight broke out about 5am when Zhang was eating crayfish with one male friend and two female friends at the restaurant in a commercial complex on Jiangxue Road, police said. Zhang and his male friend, both drunk, were angry at three men for staring at the girls they were with.

The fight soon ensued, and Zhang was beaten by the trio with iron rods. He tried to escape but collapsed in a dark lane outside the restaurant, witnesses said. The three men fled the scene on scooters.

Zhang's male friend was also injured in the fight but was not in serious condition, police said.

"Both sides were drunk while Zhang and his friends were in a more serious condition," Jiang said yesterday.

Zhang, a migrant worker from southern China's Guangdong Province, usually hung out with his friends around the scene, said his cousin surnamed Qiao.
