Man gave friend fatal anesthetic
A DEBT-RIDDEN man whose friend died after he allegedly gave him animal anesthetic in order to rob him has been charged, prosecutors said yesterday.
Suspect Sun Tao has been charged with robbery, as this was the motive of the crime, Changning District prosecutors said.
In January 2010, Sun is said to have borrowed 200,000 yuan (US$31,332) from relatives and moneylenders to invest in the stock market.
But the 32-year-old lost most of this in stock market dealings and was desperately trying to pay his debts before a June deadline, said prosecutors.
It is claimed Sun bought animal anesthetic "Lu Mian Ling" and drugged pets he saw on the street and later sold them.
But this venture made little impression on his debts, which had reached 300,000 yuan due to high interest rates, Sun told prosecutors.
On June 19, Sun went to visit friend Peng Gen to discuss business and stayed overnight in Peng's luxury home.
The next day, Sun decided to steal money from Peng and poured 2 milliliters of the drug into Peng's tea. He then said he had to see a friend and left the house to create an alibi, prosecutors said.
Sun said he called Peng three times to check if the anesthetic had worked and returned to the house in the afternoon to find his friend asleep, snoring on the sofa.
Prosecutors said Sun searched every room but found no cash or valuables.
Over the next two hours, Sun said he injected Peng with Lu Mian Ling three times in order to keep him unconscious while he sought a buyer for his Buick car.
Prosecutors said Sun found Peng dead when he returned on July 22.
He hid the body under the bed and called Peng's girlfriend, claiming Peng had been caught by police, then fled Shanghai.
Sun was held in Shangyu City in Zhejiang Province.
