Man gets 30 months in arson to extort parents
A MAN who set fire to an apartment owned by his parents to extort money from them for gambling and drugs was sentenced to 30 months in prison for arson by Baoshan District court, Jiefang Daily reported today.
The parents of the man, surnamed Gui, 30, sold one of their two apartments for 980,000 yuan (US$159,773) and gave Gui 700,000 yuan.
However, the court heard that Gui used up all the money quickly on drugs and gambling. His heartbroken parents rented another apartment and no longer supported their son.
Prosecutors said Gui set fire to the apartment where he lived in November 2012 in an attempt to force his parents to show up and give him the remaining 280,000 yuan.
The fire damaged not only the family's apartment but also the neighbors' upstairs.
