Man given 5-day detention for trying to smuggle in knife on flight
A man was given a five-day detention after he twice tried to take a knife with him through the security check at Hongqiao International Airport on Friday morning.
Airport police said, the man, surnamed Ma, was scheduled to take a flight to Kunming in Yunnan Province. He was going through security check at the airport’s Terminal 1 at 6:50am when they found a Swiss pocket knife in his bag.
Security staff asked him to either abandon it or put it away in checked luggage. Ma told Shanghai Television he went back to check it in but there was a long queue. With 20 minutes left for his flight, Ma decided to “take a risk” and hid the knife in one of his shoes and went back for security check again.
He was stopped again and the security check immediately alerted the airport police. He was detained for disturbing order and will now spend the Spring Festival holiday in detention.
