Man held after driving race car on public road, wearing slippers

A man was caught and punished by traffic police yesterday morning when he roared off a public road in Pudong in a race car, a special type of vehicle that is banned from ordinary streets.

The man is believed to be a company worker, who was trying to help move the race car to a nearby auto park site.

He told the police that he's seeking to take a shortcut since the route he's allowed to use was temporarily closed by road authorities.

He was caught midway by patrolling traffic cops. Police chased after his car and made him stop on Guozhan Road.

Police checked the vehicle and found the car was refitted with relocated oil and water tanks. And its steering wheel was also installed on the right side.

“It’s very dangerous to have such a car driving on a regular street. It’s like having a walking bomb on the road,” said a traffic cop on the scene.

Police also found the driver was wearing only slippers, another traffic offense that raises safety risks during driving.

Police ruled that the driver should lose all the 12 penalty points with his driving license revoked. Besides, police have also detained the vehicle, which would not be returned to its owner until legal procedures are proven completed.
