Man held for gold theft
A WORKER has been detained for allegedly stealing gold worth over 300,000 yuan (US$43,939) from a factory in Jinshan District, city police said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Han, slipped through security checks by hiding the gold in his shoes, police said.
Han took advantage of a steel rod in his left leg to dodge metal detector checks each time, police added.
The theft was discovered at a metal-processing factory in November last year when the company found gold weighing about 1 kilogram missing.
A police investigation discovered that it was an -inside job and Han was soon captured. Han was a worker in the factory's gold refining workshop and dealt with many gold offcuts.
Han told officers that he would put the scraps in his shoes when other workers were not around to see him.
Despite metal detector checks on workers when leaving the factory, security staff knew that Han had a steel rod in his leg due to injuries sustained in an accident and would let him pass. It took Han four attempts to steal 1 kilogram of gold, police said.
The gold was sold for 220,000 yuan, which was much lower than the market value, to a second-hand gold processing store in suburban Qingpu District. The store owner, surnamed Tu, was also caught and about 180,000 yuan worth of gold was recovered and returned to the factory, police said.
