Man held for killing woman in hit-and-run

CITY police said yesterday they have detained a man for the hit-and-run death of a woman and the injury of another in the Pudong New Area.

The suspect, surnamed Li, said he was attacked by two men who stole his tricycle, but police said he fabricated the story to escape blame for the accident.

The accident happened on October 22. Two women were hit by a tricycle on Nianjiabang Road. The tricycle was abandoned and the driver fled.

About two hours later, Li called police claiming he was robbed of his tricycle by two passengers a few hundred meters from where the accident happened.

Officer Li Jia said: "He claimed he was knocked down from behind, but his injuries were at the front, which he could not explain." Police checked CCTV records but could find no evidence of his passengers. They concluded the suspect, and an uncle who supported his story, lied.

Police said the suspect eventually confessed he had been involved in the accident.

The accident is said to have happened when the suspect found something wrong with his tricycle and dismounted to push it. He lost control of the vehicle, which sped forward, knocking down him and the two women.
