Man held for tossing 1-year-old son to floor
A Man was detained yesterday for throwing his one-year-old son to the ground and fracturing his skull, police said.
The suspect, surnamed Chen, came to see his wife on the second floor of Renji Hospital in the Pudong New Area on Sunday about 11pm, police said.
The hospital's surveillance camera showed Chen holding the boy on his shoulder while talking on his cellphone.
He then threw his son hard to the floor with the boy appearing to land head first.
The boy sustained a fractured skull and a cerebral hemorrhage and was still in critical condition, according to the hospital.
Police detained Chen, 31, yesterday for intentional injury.
The hospital said the case is typical of domestic violence.
The family is from central China's Hubei Province with three kids - a boy and two girls - and they rented an apartment in Minhang District, according to police.
Chen argued with his wife, surnamed Jiang, over babysitting arrangements on Saturday night and then stabbed her with a knife, police said. She was later hospitalized.
"He told me to take the children back to our hometown," Jiang told a TV news report. "I refused as I had to work. My mother-in-law was taking care of them at the time."
Chen's mother said her son and daughter-in-law argued regularly about the children during the past week.
Police said when Chen couldn't find his wife at the hospital on Sunday night, he took his anger out on his son.
The case was still being investigated.
