Man held over lake arms case
A MAN, 29, has been detained for allegedly killing and dismembering a woman in Shanghai's Putuo District.
Police said yesterday the unemployed man, surnamed Wang, from Henan Province, dumped the victim's arms into a man-made lake on the west side of the city.
The arms were found last Friday.
Other body parts of the victim, surnamed Tao, were recovered later in different locations, Putuo officers said.
Tao was last heard from on July 26 before she ended a week's work as a waitress in a Putuo restaurant. Police said she was murdered the following day.
Tao lived with a friend surnamed Hong as well as Hong's boyfriend, identified as Wang, in a rented apartment near Huxi Workers' Cultural Palace, a public entertainment venue that contains the lake where the arms were found.
Police said Wang had once served a prison term for robbery.
Wang told police that he was angry at Tao because he believed she told Hong to break up with him.
Hong wanted to end the relationship with Wang just days before the murder, police said.
Wang's inability to find a job and a lack of money made him angry and depressed, officers said.
He killed Tao when she was alone at home and cut up her body on the night of July 27, they said.
Wang dumped body parts in various areas and told Hong he had no idea of her whereabouts.
The arms were found by a worker at the lake.
It took three days of extensive forensic tests to determine the identity of Tao.
