Man held over street attacks

POLICE have detained a man suspected of randomly attacking four people, including an 84-year-old man, in Hongkou District yesterday.

They said the suspect, a 46-year-old migrant worker surnamed Huang, "behaved abnormally" but had no record of mental disease. Police said they would test him for drugs while investigating.

The victims, who suffered broken bones and bruises, were all in a stable condition today, while the 84-year-old suffered serious head injuries, district police said.

About 6am yesterday Huang left a taxi on Feihong Road and started to chase and beat up passers by, witnesses said.

"He first quarreled with the cab driver and didn't want to pay the fare, and asked the cabbie for money," said the owner of a nearby newsstand. "Then he walked here and asked everybody for money."

After several people rejected his demands, he appeared to go mad and "hit everyone he saw," the owner alleged. Two other snack stalls were attacked.
