Man holds knife at his own neck

POLICE disarmed a man threatening to kill himself with a knife at a noodle restaurant near Shanghai Railway Station yesterday.

After a two-hour stand-off, they tackled the man, who was later sent to hospital. He had been slightly injured when police apprehended him and had earlier cut his arm.

The man, who has not been identified, claimed he was being chased by a killer, police said. They suspected he was suffering from a mental disorder.

No one else was injured in the incident.

At about 11:20am, the man, wearing a white shirt and black trousers, appeared normal when he walked into the restaurant, a staff member surnamed Zhao at the Noodle Bar on Meiyuan Road.

However, he suddenly took out a fruit knife and held it at his own neck.

He then asked Zhao to call the police and promised not to hurt anyone in the restaurant.

Police evacuated the restaurant and cordoned off the area.

They tried to talk to the man but during the two-hour stand-off, he cut himself on his left arm. Police closed in and tackled him at about 1:30pm.
