Man in custody after homemade explosive triggered in Pudong

A man who triggered a homemade explosive in an Internet cafe on Shangnan Road, Pudong New Area, on Monday has been detained, police said today.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the suspect threatened to blow up the Internet cafe if the owner didn't give him 300,000 yuan (US$48,362).

Police said the suspect was wearing a backpack and had a glass bottle with something that looked like a detonating fuse at the top.

The suspect triggered the explosive despite police efforts to persuade the man to surrender. The suspect sustained minor facial injuries from the blast. Police didn’t say how much damage the explosion caused.

He later told officers that he came up with the blackmail scheme because he had a large gambling debt.

Police added they are still investigating the case.
