Man indicted for shopping mall bomb hoax

The man detained for making a false bomb threat five times has been charged with fabricating and spreading terrorist information, Zhabei District prosecutors said yesterday.

The offender surnamed Chen allegedly called the police five times in two hours on the morning of July 16, claiming there was a bomb in the RT-Mart on Jiangchang Road.

More than 200 policemen scoured the shopping mall and evacuated more than 1,800 customers and employees. No bomb was found after several hours of search.

The RT-Mart management said the false alarm cost it an economic loss of about 160,000 yuan (US$25,193).

Chen was later captured by Zhabei police. He allegedly said he made the phone call from an Internet bar where he worked because he felt bored.
