Man jailed after 200,000 yuan swindle

A MAN who swindled his girlfriend out of about 200,000 yuan (US$32,258) after suspecting she betrayed him was sentenced to four years in prison recently by the Jiading District People's Court.

The man surnamed Wang started dating the woman, who worked at a foot massage parlor, in 2009. Wang suspected she was having affairs with other men last year after she started receiving ambiguous text messages from other men.

Wang decided to get revenge and developed an elaborate lie to get her money.

He told his girlfriend his sister died and that her former husband was trying to take ownership of two apartments that rightfully belonged to his family, the court heard.

Wang then told her his family was preparing a lawsuit against the former husband, but they needed a large sum of money to hire a lawyer, the court heard.

His girlfriend gave Wang 100,000 yuan to pay a lawyer and another 96,000 yuan to cover other lawsuit fees. She alerted police after getting suspicious as there was no news about the lawsuit.
